A MENU FOR DOGS WITH KIDNEY FAILURE by Roy Carter
As much as we share our lives with our furry friends, we also share with them the same diseases. Kidney failure is also one of the life threatening diseases that afflict dogs as well as humans. Their kidneys malfunction during their 13th to 14th year of age similar to 65 years of human life.
Like all life style diseases, kidney failure is brought about by poor nutrition and bad genes. This ailment can be inherited by dogs from their predecessors who also suffered the disease. Lack of good exercise and ingesting the wrong food could lead not only to kidney failure but the malfunction of other body organs.
There is a menu of the right foods that you can give your dog. You can take the necessary precautions by monitoring what your dog intakes to prevent your dog from experiencing the hardships of kidney failure.
THE MENU:
Low Protein Diet: Failed kidneys have a hard time separating protein from wastes. Veterinarians recommend cutting down on the intake of protein rich foods but not the total elimination of it from their diet. This is done to lessen the stress on the kidneys when processing the food.
Low Cholesterol and Sodium Diet: Once the kidneys start to malfunction, cholesterol levels will rise and cause a buildup in the arteries. This puts stress on the heart. A high sodium level raises blood pressure and this can lead to a heart failure. So monitor the food that you give your dog. Make it cholesterol free and go easy on the salt!
Specialty Dog Food: There is specially formulated dog food that your doctor can recommend that’s specifically made for dogs with kidney disease. It is mixed with the right kind of nutrients and medications your dog will need. Watch out for melamine! It is a material used to make plastic and is mixed with wheat gluten to make dog food. Avoid dog food with that ingredient.
